Safeguarding

How we protect the people we work with, and what to do if something about us concerns you.

Draft — not yet approved

This is a working draft. NexGen Foundation must review, complete and approve it before launch, and appoint the named safeguarding contact.

Our principles

  • Do no harm. No action we take should leave a worker in a worse position than before they contacted us.
  • The worker decides. We act on what the worker wants wherever possible, and we do not take steps on their behalf without agreement, except where someone is at immediate risk.
  • Confidentiality by default. Case information is shared only with those who need it to help.
  • Never with the employer or agent. We do not disclose a worker’s contact with us to an employer or recruitment agent without specific permission.
  • Non-discrimination. Support is provided without discrimination on any basis.

People at particular risk

Some situations carry additional risk, and we treat them differently:

  • Children. Where a case involves a person under 18, it is escalated immediately and handled only by designated staff.
  • Trafficking and forced labour. These cases are treated as critical. We are careful about what is recorded and who it is shared with, because the wrong disclosure can endanger someone.
  • Workers under observation. Where a worker may be watched or controlled, we follow the contact instructions given on the form — including not calling — and use alternative routes such as the family contact in India.

On this website

  • A Quick exit control on every page leaves the site immediately and removes it from the back button. Pressing Escape three times does the same.
  • Case pages are excluded from search engines and are sent with no-store caching, so they do not linger on a shared or borrowed device.
  • The form asks whether it is safe to call before we call.
  • Only the worker’s name, country, situation and one contact number are required — every other field can be skipped.
  • The case-tracking page reveals only the stage of a case, never personal details.

Who can see case information

Access is limited to the Videsh Mitra case team, and each person sees only what their role requires. A field volunteer supporting a case abroad sees what they need in order to act, not the full record. Every access to a case is recorded.

Our people

Volunteers and field representatives who handle case information are screened before they are given access, and are bound by confidentiality requirements. They have no governmental, diplomatic, police, immigration or enforcement powers, and must not present themselves as having any.

[NEXGEN TO CONFIRM] Screening process, code of conduct, and what happens when it is breached.

Raising a concern about us

If anything about Videsh Mitra, a volunteer, a representative or a partner concerns you — including anyone asking you for money in our name — please tell us.

[NEXGEN TO CONFIRM] Named safeguarding contact and a reporting route that does not go through the person a concern is about.

In the meantime, concerns can be sent to videshmitra@nexgenfoundations.org.

Stories and photographs

We publish a person’s story only with their specific written consent, recorded against the case. Names and photographs are used only if separately agreed. Consent can be withdrawn at any time and the story is removed. We do not publish anything that could endanger a worker or their family.
